World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Elder Abuse

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organisation established World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, on June 15, 2006 as an annual event.

Help disseminate the word about June 15’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Unfortunately, elder abuse is a pervasive issue, despite the fact that it is difficult to conceive of anyone intentionally intending to injure a senior. Some instances of elder abuse are intended to exploit the victim financially; you have likely heard of senior-targeted fraud. In other instances, it’s straightforward carelessness: Carers do not provide the essentials, such as nourishing food, proper medication, safety, or assistance with sanitation. If you observe something, report it.

The background of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organisation established World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, on June 15, 2006 as an annual event. In its resolution 66/127, the United Nations General Assembly designated that date as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day on which the entire world condemns all forms of elder abuse.

WEAAD aims to provide communities around the world with an opportunity to promote a better comprehension of the abuse older people endure by bringing attention to the cultural, social, economic, and demographic factors that affect them. Abuse of the elderly is one of the least researched forms of violence and is addressed in national action plans less frequently than other significant social issues.

According to the United Nations International Plan of Action, elder abuse is a public health and human rights issue. The world’s population is ageing, with the number of older individuals expected to reach 1,4 billion by 2030. According to research, between 4 and 6 percent of the elderly suffer from maltreatment, the majority of which goes unreported. This day is meant to remind us to keep our focus on our ageing population, ensuring that they live a life of high quality and dignity.
