World Essential Workers Day is observed annually on March 15 across the globe. The day is observed to show appreciation to all essential employees whose contributions are frequently underappreciated. Essential employees are indispensable to any economy. They perform all necessary functions. We are surrounded by essential employees, and in nearly every emergency, essential workers are the initial responders. The essential workforce includes police officers, medical personnel, and sanitation department employees, among others. Without them, our lives would essentially cease to exist. We wish every essential worker a happy World Essential Workers Day.
In 2021, World Essential Workers Day was first observed. It is the creation of Ja’Nay Ratcliff, a nine-year-old girl from central Texas who has demonstrated that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. She requested that all essential employees be honored on a particular day in a conversation with the mayor of Killeen. Ratcliff wished to recognize essential employees, such as firefighters and police officers, who place their own safety in jeopardy during dangerous situations.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Ratcliff was notably moved by the sacrifices of essential workers. The mayor agreed with Ratcliff’s recommendation and recognized essential employees during the State of the City Address.
Ratcliff was inspired by her social worker mother, Shawnya Golden. Golden has actively supported her daughter’s efforts to establish World Essential Workers Day. Her mother is especially appreciative that a person of such a tender age is sympathetic to such an important cause. In addition to being a kind individual, Ratcliff is also a gifted writer. At age nine, she has already written three novels! Ratcliff intends to continue writing books and performing good deeds for the rest of her life. World Essential Workers Day is a lesson in charity and compassion.
