World Hydrography Day is observed annually on June 21 to honour the contributions of hydrographers. Hydrographers have significantly contributed to the determination of contemporary maritime boundaries and underwater topography. The United Nations decided in 1970 to establish an International Hydrographic Organisation for all scientists and geologists in recognition of their efforts. After this, in 2005, a day was established to honour and appreciate the work of hydrographers. This has not only made navigation easier and more reliable, but it has also enabled scientists and hydrographers to develop more sophisticated methods for ocean surveys. The advancements in the field made it possible for new inventions such as SONAR to detect underwater landmasses for ships sailing above and submarines travelling below.
