Hydrography is a branch of geography that concentrates on the topography of the ocean floor. As a result of the hydrographers’ research and the establishment of naval offices for this task, more accurate data was collected and maps were produced. This has not only made navigation easier and more reliable, but it has also enabled scientists and hydrographers to develop more sophisticated methods for ocean surveys. The advancements in the field made it possible for new inventions such as SONAR to detect underwater landmasses for ships sailing above and submarines travelling below.
