Information architecture is defined differently depending on the field. In 1976, architect and graphic designer Richard Saul Wurman used the term 'information architecture' for the first time.
World Information Architecture Day is an annual event held on March 5 by volunteers in a variety of locations to promote global dialogue about Information Architecture (IA) and its practical applications. It is a day to learn about the structure of IA and how we can connect to make it simple for people to find, comprehend, and use the information they require. In fact, we are already engaged in IA practises. IA practises include, for instance, the website navigation you see when you visit National Today.
Information architecture is defined differently depending on the field. In 1976, architect and graphic designer Richard Saul Wurman used the term “information architecture” for the first time. According to Wurman, an information architect is “the individual who organises the patterns inherent in data, making the complex clear; a person who creates the structure or map of information that allows others to find their personal paths to knowledge; the emerging 21st-century professional occupation addressing the needs of an era centred on clarity, human understanding, and the science of information organisation.”
From these definitions, we can conclude that information architecture (IA) is the arrangement of data patterns necessary for comprehending complex information. It is a structure or map of facts that allows users to locate the specific information they require. IA is also a means of addressing the requirements of an era in which clarity, human comprehension, and the science of organising information are paramount. It’s the process of making information discoverable. One example is a website’s navigation, which helps us locate specific information. Web navigation is not identical to IA, but it is one of its applications.
In a world where so much information is readily available, IA can assist us in determining which are credible and which are disinformation. It facilitates the discovery of pertinent information and the comprehension of complex matters. It is the responsibility of information architects to make all of these possible. One of the goals of World Information Architect Day is to create and unite a global community of IA advocates and practitioners. Join this global community to promote the importance of IA in various fields.
