World Octopus Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Octogenuses

Octopuses belong to the class Cephalopoda, whose name derives from the Greek word 'októpus,' which translates to 'head foot' or 'eight foot.' The specific name 'octopus' originates from this class.

October 8 is observed annually as World Octopus Day, and preparations are underway to commemorate the presence of this marine icon. Octopuses are extraordinarily adaptable and intelligent. Certain Octopus fossils date back to before the dinosaur epoch, making them older than the majority of extant species. Certainty dictates that this extraordinary marine creature possesses characteristics beyond its bulbous cranium and eight legs equipped with suction cups.

The background of World Octopus Day

Octopuses belong to the class Cephalopoda, whose name derives from the Greek word ‘októpus,’ which translates to ‘head foot’ or ‘eight foot.’ The specific name ‘octopus’ originates from this class. Octopuses possess eight limbs, the lower portions of which typically accommodate suction cups. Clusters of neurons within the arms enable distinct arms to perform distinct duties simultaneously. These clusters of neurons could potentially be regarded as minds. Thus, octopuses are endowed with a total of nine brains, of which one is located in the center and regulates the nervous system, while the remaining ones are situated in each limb.

Octopuses are equipped with three organs, not one. Two are responsible for transporting blood to the pharynx, while the remaining one circulates blood throughout the body. It has been documented that they are exceptionally intelligent and can perform tasks such as opening jars and operating instruments. They are extraordinarily adaptable, adept at camouflage, and inhabit every ocean on the planet.

Furthermore, octopuses are aesthetically pleasing due to their wide array of sizes, hues, and shapes. Certain species inhabit exceedingly modest depths in the ocean, whereas others reside thousands of meters beneath the surface. Octopuses, which are sometimes referred to as “chameleons of the sea,” can frequently alter their color to defend themselves from predators by blending in with their environmental surroundings.

World Octopus Day was reportedly established in 2006 by “The Octopus News Magazine Online” to honor the octopus’s singularity. Since that time, it has been observed annually.
