In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) instituted World Population Day. This date was originally designated as “World Population Day” by the United Nations General Assembly, and in December 1990, resolution 45/216 made it official.

The purpose of World Population Day is to draw attention to the increasing problems associated with a growing global population.
