The 11th of July is World Population Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the significance of population issues. The United Nations established the day as a consequence of the widespread interest in Five Billion Day in 1987. Read on for details on how to observe this significant holiday.

The background of World Population Day

You may be aware that there are currently more than seven billion people on earth, but how often do you pause to consider what that means? The purpose of Five Billion Day in 1987 was to commemorate the date when the world’s population supposedly reached five billion individuals, which supposedly occurred on July 11, 1987 (hence the annual date for World Population Day). Look at how much the population has grown since then! Concerns pertaining to population include family planning, gender equality, environmental implications, and human rights.

In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) instituted World Population Day. The 11 July 1987 commemoration of ‘Five Billion Day’ sparked the creation of this holiday. This date was originally designated as “World Population Day” by the United Nations General Assembly, and in December 1990, resolution 45/216 made it official.

The purpose of World Population Day is to draw attention to the increasing problems associated with a growing global population. Considering the unsustainable rate at which global resources are being depleted, overpopulation is a critical concern. The effects of overpopulation on development and the environment are emphasised. Population growth sheds light on the health issues women confront during pregnancy and childbirth, making family planning, gender equality, and maternal health more crucial than ever.

The issue of population is also straining society: heinous offences in the areas of gender inequality and human rights are on the rise, particularly in developing nations. The leadership is already inadequately caring for its citizens, and as more people enter the globe, violations such as human trafficking and child labour are becoming increasingly commonplace.
