The background of World Portuguese Language Day

The intergovernmental organisation Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) designated May 5 as World Portuguese Language Day. Since 2000, C.P.L.P. has maintained an official partnership with UNESCO. However, it was not until the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2019 that the 5th of May was declared World Portuguese Language Day.

Galician was a combination of regional dialects and standard Latin. The language evolved over time, and around the 14th century, Portuguese emerged as its descendant.
