World Soil Day

World Soil Day 2023: Every December 5 is World Soil Day. How often do we respect the ground when our futures depend on healthy soil? Strange that we don’t talk about it enough? Very undervalued but vital—food security would not exist without soil. Thankfully, this day celebrates healthy, sustainable soil management and its maintenance. We’ll explain why soil is so amazing and why we should pay more attention!

World Soil Day history

All life starts and ends in soil. It provides food, medicine, and water filters. Most of us overlook dirt and expect it will always be there. That’s not true. Over 1,000 years to grow 4 inches of soil.

The International Union of Soil Sciences proposed a global soil awareness day in 2002. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was in charge of it. He inspired and drove the movement with his love for this most valuable resource.

The US FAO endorsed World Soil Day’s formalization. To promote healthy soil worldwide, a platform was created. The FAO Conference unanimously recognized World Soil Day in 2013 and urged its approval at the 68th U.N. General Assembly. In 2014, the UN General Assembly declared December 5 to be World Soil Day. The late King of Thailand, whose birthday it is, approved the ceremony. It commemorates his legacy and his great labor to make the day possible.

Since then, World Soil Day has promoted sustainable soil management. Many individuals worldwide utilize the day to educate and inspire. Each year’s topic is different. It urges us to value this wonderful natural resource, which provides our food and anchors ecosystems.
