World Sparrow Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Sparrows

World Sparrow Day is observed annually on March 20 to raise awareness about sparrow conservation. The background of World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day is an initiative launched by the Nature Forever Society of India (founded by Mohammed Dilawar), the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France, and numerous other international organizations. Although the holiday is called Sparrow Day, it was established primarily to raise awareness of sparrows, as well as the beauty and diversity of other common birds that may share our environment.

Mohammed Dilawar, an ardent conservationist, began the initiative to provide special care for house Sparrows in Nashik. During a casual conversation at the Nature Forever Society’s office, the notion to make the campaign official was conceived. In 2010, the first globe Sparrow Day was celebrated throughout the globe.

It provided a forum for avian conservationists to network and share conservation-improving ideas. It seeks to provide a point of contact for people from all over the world to unite and raise awareness of the need to protect common biodiversity or species of lower conservation status.

In urban areas, sparrows or house sparrows have been observed chirping in green spaces and backyards; however, during the hot summers, they require cold shade and water. According to ornithologists, they were once quite common in residential areas but are now on the verge of extinction due to noise pollution, lack of nesting sites in modern structures, pesticide use, and lack of food.

In 2012, as a result of the raised awareness, the house sparrow became the official state bird of Delhi.

As a means to give back to nature, more and more people are joining the campaign to preserve these birds. Some community members have gone so far as to create avian nests for sparrows and other common birds.
