Annual observance of World Students’ Day occurs on October 15. The day marks the former Indian president Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam’s birthday. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born in the pilgrimage hub of Rameswaram on Pamban Island, India, to a Muslim household on October 15, 1931. July 18, 2002 marked his overwhelming victory as the eleventh president of the Republic of India. The populace adored Kalam during his five-year term as president, earning him the affectionate moniker “People’s President.”
World Students’ Day is observed on October 15, which also happens to be the birthday of the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India. However, the holiday’s origins are the subject of contention. While certain sources assert that it was instituted and is presently observed by the United Nations (U.N.), there is an absence of evidence supporting such a claim. The sole United Nations-observed international day on October 15 is International Day of Rural Women. Moreover, there are allegations that Rajiv Chandran, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Center, asserted that the United Nations had never officially proclaimed such a day. However, the purpose of World Students’ Day is to honor the influence Kalam had on the educational sector of India.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born in the pilgrimage hub of Rameswaram on Pamban Island, India, to a Tamil Muslim family on October 15, 1931. A physics graduate of Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, he earned his degree. Following his graduation with a degree in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology, he commenced employment with the Defense Research and Development Organization’s Aeronautical Development Establishment. Throughout his distinguished and dazzling scientific career, he rose to the status of India’s most renowned nuclear scientist during the 1990s.
On July 18, 2002, Kalam was sworn in as the eleventh president of the Republic of India. Throughout his five-year term, he was held in high regard and affectionately referred to as the “President of the People.” Following his presidency, he delivered lectures at a number of tertiary institutions. In addition to holding numerous other positions, he was a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, an honorary associate at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. Seven honorary doctorates bestowed upon Kalam by forty universities attest to his brilliance in his discipline. During his lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong on July 27, 2015, he experienced a cardiac arrest and subsequently succumbed at Bethany Hospital.
