World Toilet Day 2023: World Toilet Day, which the United Nations General Assembly officially designated as November 19, is annually organized through a collaborative effort between UN-Water and governments worldwide. Today, we shall discuss an invention that remains concealed behind closed doors, yet its significance is indisputable. Therefore, proceed reading if you desire a “ode to the commode.”

World Toilet Day 2023: History

Singaporean philanthropist Jack Sim founded the World Toilet Organization on November 19, 2001, and the organization subsequently declared that day to be World Toilet Day. Despite the fact that restrooms are merely the first stage of sanitation systems, the WTO chose “World Toilet Day” in place of “World Sanitation Day” to facilitate communication with the general public.

The purpose of establishing World Toilet Day was to increase public consciousness and understanding of broader sanitation systems, including hand cleansing, stormwater management, and wastewater treatment. Goal 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals pertains to the provision of sufficient sanitation, encompassing a refuse management system that ensures safety. Their endeavors to draw attention to the sanitation crises were bolstered in 2010 with the United Nations’ official declaration of the right to water and sanitation as a human right.

A collaborative endeavor between the World Toilet Organization and the Government of Singapore produced Singapore’s inaugural United Nations resolution in 2013, titled “Sanitation for All.” This resolution advocated for a collaborative effort to resolve the global sanitation crises. As a consequence, it was designated an official United Nations day, and at the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, 122 countries adopted the resolution. In observance of World Toilet Day 2015, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon urged renewed efforts to ensure that all people have access to adequate sanitation. He recalled the 2013 “Call to Action on Sanitation,” which sought to eradicate open defecation by 2025.

World Toilet Day 2023 Theme

This year’s World Toilet Day theme “Accelerate Change”, serves as a reminder that the world is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

It honors a contemporary marvel.

As innovations continue to develop since the invention of the flush toilet, plumbing and toilets have altered the way we live. Consumers no longer waste billions of dollars annually and hundreds of billions of gallons of water due to recent developments. Indeed, according to the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States, the implementation of environmentally favorable plumbing systems nationwide could yield annual savings exceeding $17 billion and 3 trillion gallons of water. That is certainly a cause for celebration.

The matter is urgent.

This, like you after a large swallow, cannot wait. Diarrhea resulting from inadequate sanitation and contaminated water kills 315,000 children annually, according to United Nations data. Moreover, inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices in the workplaces of a number of nations are causing a decline in productivity that can cost those nations up to 5 percent of their gross domestic product.
