This year, the World’s Largest Pet Walk takes place on September 23. It is an annual fundraiser that brings together individuals and their pets to celebrate the health benefits of physical activity. Every September, individuals with pets take to the streets with their animals and participate in a walk to raise funds to support the human-animal bond. Since 2018, the World’s Largest Pet Walk has raised more than $167,000 to register therapy animal teams and spread animal affection to those in need.
The background of World’s Largest Pet Walk
The relationship between humans and their companions, particularly dogs, is nearly as old as time itself. The continued interbreeding between dogs and wild wolves significantly influenced the domestication of dogs, and older dog populations gradually give way to newer ones. A few genetic investigations have documented early domestication events in particular regions. Approximately 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, India was home to a small population of gray wolves. According to one study, these wolves were the progenitors of early canines. In the early years of the relationship between man and dog, there was no culture of walking dogs, as there were far fewer people than there are today. As a result, society was better structured to enable dogs to roam more freely. As time progressed, people began to walk their canines, leashing them and guiding them along designated paths. For some, it was nothing more than a display of social elitism, while for others, it was the consequence of a strong bond with their pets. The popularity of dog walking did not begin to grow until the late 19th century. Jim Buck pioneered professional dog walking in the United States, and today there are individuals who are specifically trained to walk dogs and who assist dog owners in walking their canines for a fee.
Some dog walkers may choose to walk multiple canines at once, while others may opt to walk only one. Typically, the length of a walk is determined by the dog’s breed or the dog owner’s request, spanning from short walks intended to last no longer than the time required for the dog to eliminate waste to longer walks with a specific time limit set by the owner. The age of the dog is also taken into account when determining the duration of walks. Dogs younger than 12 months of age should not be brought on walks longer than an hour; for larger breeds, the minimum age is 18 months. This precaution is merely intended to protect the dog’s growing bones and joints.
