Yom HaShoah 2023: Date, History, Facts about Racism

Yom HaShoah translates to "Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah" in Hebrew, which means "Day of Holocaust Remembrance and Heroism." HaShoah is also the Hebrew word for 'whirlwind.'

This is why we commemorate Yom HaShoah on Nisan 27: history not only recalls us of what has passed, but also recounts tales of sufferings and victories. If the 27th falls on the same day as the Jewish Sabbath, the date is advanced by one day. This year, it begins on April 17 at sunset and concludes on April 18 at sunset. Yom HaShoah is a Holocaust Remembrance Day on which Jews from around the globe pause to reflect on the sufferings endured by their ancestors. Many of these Jews are direct descendants of victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Hitler and his followers were responsible for the deaths of approximately 11 million individuals, 6 million of whom were Jews. In 1951, the Israeli parliament mandated the yearly observance of Yom HaShoah so that this significant historical event would not be forgotten.

The background of Yom HaShoah

Yom HaShoah translates to “Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah” in Hebrew, which means “Day of Holocaust Remembrance and Heroism.” HaShoah is also the Hebrew word for ‘whirlwind.’ The day was officially recognised by the Israeli parliament on April 12, 1951. The day occurs one week after the Passover holiday and falls on the 27th of Nisan on the Jewish calendar.

Due to the dearth of compassion Israeli youth had for Holocaust victims, who, according to the youth, were taken for slaughter like sheep without any resistance, this day of remembrance was established. As soon as authorities learned of these views, they made it a priority to shed light on the martyrs who fought against Hitler and his forces. In educational institutions, tales of valour and tenacity have begun to be taught.

Since 1951, people have commemorated the occasion by igniting special wax candles shaped like the Star of David. In addition to being a national holiday in Israel, Jews visit synagogues on Yom HaShoah to recite the Torah, share anecdotes, etc. On this day, at 10 a.m., sirens sound for two minutes, and everyone is required to pause for the duration of the sirens in remembrance of the Holocaust atrocities. All vehicles on roads must also halt. On Yom HaShoah, every aspect of life is oriented towards the commemoration of Jewish courage and resolve during the difficult years of 1933 to 1945.
