Youth Homelessness Matters Day is observed on the third Wednesday of April, which is April 19 this year, to increase public awareness and discussion of homeless youth so that innovative and sustainable solutions can be developed to support their needs and aspirations. Did you know that more than 20,000 young Australians (12 to 24 years old) are destitute on any given night? In 2019 and 2020, more than half of 18-year-olds accessing homeless services had encountered domestic and family violence. This is why adolescent homelessness is significant.

The background of Youth Homelessness Matters Day

Youth Homelessness Matters Day (Y.H.M.D.) is a national campaign that has been held annually since 1990 on the third Wednesday of April or in the middle of Youth Week to promote awareness of youth homelessness among the general public and policymakers. Y.H.M.D. is a National Youth Coalition for Housing initiative that allows everyone to take action and declare that youth homelessness matters. According to the 2016 Australian Census, 28,000 Australians between the ages of 12 and 24 are homeless, representing 24% of the homeless population and 16% of the total population.

Approximately one in six young individuals may have experienced homelessness in some capacity. The overwhelming majority of homeless youth are hidden in shelters, couch-surfing situations, and automobiles with their families. Typically, these youth lack a residence because they are evading conflict, violence, and family disintegration. Extreme overcrowding is the leading cause of their destitution. As a result, many of these adolescents develop substance dependencies and mental health issues.

The Australian homelessness services system is underfunded and overstretched, resulting in the rejection of individuals. And it will be more difficult for youth with addictions, mental health issues, and behavioural issues to obtain shelter. Supporting these youths requires a large number of highly trained staff members 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year, but most crisis services lack the resources to provide this level of care. Additionally, adolescent homelessness occurs in Australia’s rural and remote regions. And the dearth of shelters, social housing, and support services can make it even worse.
