Instagram Head Adam Mosseri Job History: Journey From Waiter To Billionaire

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri Job Timeline: Have you ever wondered what it takes to lead a technology firm? Then your search is over. Adam Mosseri, CEO of Threads and Instagram, has just enumerated every job he’s ever held on Meta’s new Twitter competitor, demonstrating that even successful executives must start at the bottom.

Mosseri, who was appointed CEO of Instagram in 2018 after the app’s founders resigned, six years after Mark Zuckerberg paid $1 billion for it, has been unofficially placed in command of Threads, Meta’s new darling.

But before he entered the realm of technology, he washed dishes and waited tables, jobs that were considerably less glamorous. According to his most recent Threads posts, he disclosed that his first job was as a waiter. According to the post, he moved on to bartend before becoming a designer.

Mosseri graduated from New York University in 2005 and began working as a product designer and user interface (UI) engineer for TokBox the following year, according to his LinkedIn profile, which does not indicate his time spent in the hospitality industry.

In 2008, Mosseri received his big break at Facebook, where he rose from product designer to Instagram’s chief of product over the course of 15 years.

During his decade-plus tenure at Facebook, Mosseri reportedly became a “close confidant” of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. According to a recent New York Times profile of Mosseri, the two men share similar social circles, exercise together before work, and have children around the same age.

Mosseri took paternity absence at the beginning of 2018 after the birth of his wife’s second child. When Mosseri returned to Facebook in May 2018, he assumed the role of Instagram’s vice president of products.

In September 2018, Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger shocked the tech community by announcing their departure from Facebook, where they served as CEO and CTO of the photo-sharing app, respectively. According to reports, the departure was precipitated by growing tensions between the two cofounders and Zuckerberg regarding “the direction of the product.”

A week later, Facebook announced that Mosseri, who had previously held six positions at Facebook, would assume leadership of Instagram. In the announcement, Facebook highlighted Mosseri’s design background and “deep understanding of the importance of community.” In addition, he was responsible for recruiting a new executive team to succeed himself and other recent departures.

Facebook employees reportedly expressed scepticism regarding Mosseri’s appointment as Instagram’s leader. In his first year on the job, however, Mosseri implemented a number of measures intended to improve user safety and integrity, particularly in relation to cyberbullying and mental health.

During Mosseri’s tenure, the most significant change has been Instagram’s experiment with concealing public ‘likes’ on posts, known internally as “Project Daisy.” The purpose of the test, according to Mosseri, is to promote “a less pressurised environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves.” The change is currently being tested on users across the globe, but Mosseri has indicated that the rollout could be extended to all users “early this year.”

Why does Mosseri share his professional history on the app?

The Threads CEO discussed his path to success as part of a trend on the platform in which users summarise the five positions they’ve held to reach their current position.

Although it is unclear who started the trend, Mosseri’s post has garnered a great deal of traction, with over 800 likes in less than six hours, and many others have joined the bandwagon in the comments section.

Others, meanwhile, commented on how he inspired them with his very low-tech beginnings.

Fantastic career from extremely modest origins. One user commented, “My admiration for your work and what you leave behind.”

“Wow….what is @mosseri’s secret? How did you ascend that ladder so quickly? You are an inspiration!” wrote a third.

However, in the absence of time stamps, the abrupt change in Mosseri’s employment history may give the impression that he became successful instantaneously, despite the fact that his career spans nearly two decades.

One former employee of Meta was not impressed by his evident metric success, while others were.

Nicole Wight, who departed her role as product market lead at Meta earlier this year, remarked, “I feel like this appears differently to many women and people of colour.”
