Navi Mumbai International Airport: Inauguration date, deadline and passenger amenities

Navi Mumbai International Airport update: Navi Mumbai International Airport, now under-construction, will soon become operational. It is learnt that the airport is expected to be operational by 2024.

Location

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (a multi-modal airport) will come up at the center of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai.

It will have the capacity to accommodate 90 million passengers by 2032, according to reports.

The airport will connect various coastal roads, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and the metro.

Adani Airports, one of India’s largest airport operators, will build and manage it.

Phases

According to reports, Navi Mumbai International Airport will be constructed into four phases.
The first two phases is likely to complete by December 2024. The government is mulling to make the airport one of the most environmentally friendly and energy-efficient in the globe.
This apart, the station will deploy electric buses and install charging stations at the airport to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced.

Design

The national flower of India, the lotus, served as an inspiration for the terminal’s design. Prominent British firm Zaha Hadid Architects has been given the task to design the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Inspection

In June 2023, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy, Devendra Fadnavis visited the construction site to check on progress. During the visit, Shinde mentioned that the newly constructed airport will not only serve Maharashtra but the entire country.

Name change

Recently, members of the Navi Mumbai airport all-party action committee urged the Maharashtra government to rename the airport. The committee members vented ire following delay in getting approval from the Central government to name the upcoming international airport after late leader D B Patil.
