The Sudarshan Setu in Dwarka is the largest cable-stayed bridge in India as of late. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lay the foundation stone for the bridge connecting Okha and Beyt Dwarka on October 7, 2017, while it was still known as the Okha–Beyt Dwarka Signature Bridge. In 2016, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari gave the go-ahead for the bridge’s construction. Everything you need to know about the newly opened bridge is provided here.
On February 25, 2025, the Sudarshan Setu—which links the Beyt Dwarka island in the Gulf of Kutch with the Okha mainland—was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It gives me great pleasure to officially open Sudarshan Setu, a bridge that unites people and places. Following the inauguration, PM Modi wrote on the microblogging platform X, saying, “It stands vividly as a testament of our commitment to development and progress.”
The Sudarshan Setu is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India, measuring around 2.32 km. For those who don’t know, cable-stayed bridges are a type of suspended building. A central tower and a deck supported by cables extending from the tower to the deck make up cable-stayed bridges. Compared to conventional suspension bridges, this design permits larger spans and uses fewer materials. There are sidewalks on both sides of the 4-lane bridge that are 2.50 meters wide.

The construction of the Sudarshan Setu came at a cost of about Rs 980 crore.
With representations of Lord Krishna on both sides and verses from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, the Sudarshan Setu has a distinctive design. On the higher sections of the walkway, solar panels have also been installed, producing one megawatt of electricity. The bridge’s nighttime illumination will be made possible by the electricity generated by the solar panels that have been mounted atop it.
The recently opened bridge would significantly reduce the amount of time it takes for devotees to travel between Dwarka and Beyt-Dwarka. Prior to the bridge’s erection, pilgrims had to go to Beyt Dwarka by boat. This famous bridge will be one of Devbhumi Dwarka’s main tourist attractions.
Dwarka, a city in Gujarat connected to Lord Krishna and his heritage, is thought to remain underwater.
In addition to the 8,500 locals who will gain from this project, the 2 million tourists that visit Beyt Dwarka year will find a new means of transit in the form of the bridge, which will replace the boats. Visitors who used to have to travel five hours on boats to get to Beyt Dwarka can now cross the bridge right away. There will be a three-hour reduction in their travel time.
Those who cannot afford boat tours will also have a sustainable and reasonably priced option thanks to the bridge. Residents of the area will find it easier to get around, as they often face several obstacles when traveling at night.
