Disney Confirms Development of Toy Story 5
During the conference call for Disney’s 2023 Q1 Financial Results, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Toy Story 5 has begun production. The announcement follows the upcoming release of the series’ concluding film (scheduled for 2019) and precedes the release of the Toy Story spinoff Lightyear, which will star Chris Evans but was reportedly poorly received by the original Toy Story director.
During the 2019 Toy Story 4 press tour, when asked about the possibility of a fifth sequel, producer Mark Nielsen stated (via ComicBook) that Pixar treats each film “as if it’s the first and last film [they] will ever create.”
We approach each film as if it were the first and last one we would ever create. So you must exert extra effort to ensure its durability. One does not go in deeper than one’s skis. Could there be a second? Honestly, I have no idea. Whatever the circumstance, it will not be addressed until tomorrow.
Tim Allen, who portrays Buzz Lightyear, told Entertainment Tonight in 2019 that he would support a Toy Story 5 if Disney/Pixar decided to make one.
“I see no reason why they wouldn’t do it once they reach four, as they’ve already surpassed the trilogy threshold. If you insist, do five.”
Allen appears to have confirmed his own and possibly Tom Hanks’s Woody’s return in light of Iger’s confirmation that production on the sequel can proceed:
“You have my sympathy, Woody; you are a sad, odd little man. Now we proceed to the fifth! Forward into the void!”

What Will Toy Story 5’s Plot Be Like?
Given that the conclusion of Toy Story 4 was so conclusive, many people were surprised to learn that a fifth instalment was in the works. Producer Mark Nielsen actually stated at the time, “We see Toy Tale 3 as the end of Woody’s time with Andy, and as the conclusion of Woody’s arc and the story of Buzz and Woody.”
At the conclusion of the film, Woody and Bo Peep were reunited, and he chose to remain with her, severing ties with the others as they left with Bonnie. Currently, the plot of Toy Story 5 is unknown. Despite the fact that Woody and Buzz parted ways at the conclusion of the first film, a tweet posted by Tim Allen after Disney’s announcement suggests that they will be reunited in the second.
