What Is Pride Month? The Powerful History Behind the Celebration

Pride Month happens every June to honor the first LGBTQ march after the Stonewall uprising. People celebrate how far the community has come and use the rainbow flag to show love, identity, and support for everyone.

Pride Month: Every year on June 1, people begin celebrating Pride Month. It is a time to support and honor the LGBTQ community. After many years of facing unfair treatment, LGBTQ people now use this month to show how far they have come and talk about what still needs to change. Pride Month is about love, freedom, and being able to be yourself. People all over the world join in to celebrate this important month in many different ways.

The first big Pride event started in New York more than 50 years ago. Countries across the globe take part. The whole celebration began because of something that happened one night in New York City. In June of 1969, police raided a bar called the Stonewall Inn. This bar was a popular spot for LGBTQ people, and the police had raided it many times before. But that night, people decided to fight back.

What is Pride Month and Who are Part of it?

Pride Month is a time to celebrate people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. The word “queer” is used by some people who feel different from the usual way of thinking about gender and love. Some people also add “I” for intersex and “A” for asexual to include even more people.

But Pride Month is not just for the LGBTQ community. Friends, family members, and other supporters are welcome to take part too. Pride is about kindness, support, and standing together no matter who you are.

Why Is June Pride Month?

June is Pride Month because it remembers the first big LGBTQ march held on June 28, 1970. That march happened one year after people stood up to police during a raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York. Their bravery started a new movement for equal rights. Since then, every June, people around the world celebrate how far the LGBTQ community has come and keep asking for fairness and respect for all.
