Who is Sudipto Sen? Director of controversial film The Kerala Story

Who is Sudipto Sen: The upcoming film The Kerala Story has sparked a political storm in the state, with the Congress party and other political organisations demanding a ban on the film’s screenings due to its controversial plot, which centres around ISIS recruitment in Kerala and ‘love jihad’.

The Kerala Story is written and directed by filmmaker Sudipto Sen, who has repeatedly defended his controversial film by claiming that it is based on a true incident in which 32,000 women purportedly vanished and joined ISIS.

The plot of The Kerala Story focuses on the lives of four women who were brainwashed and coerced into joining ISIS. It also depicts a subplot of ‘love jihad,’ a controversial topic that has ignited political conflict.

Who Sudipto Sen?

Sudipto Sen is a writer and director who made his film industry debut in 2006. The Kerala Story is Sen’s most anticipated film to date, garnering even more pre-release buzz than Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. Sen has primarily worked with independent productions.

Sudipto Sen made his directorial debut with the film The Last Monk, which was about an aristocratic woman who converts to Buddhism and relocates to Ladakh for a life of serenity and tranquilly.

Sudipto Sen has also directed Lucknow Times, Gurujana, and In the Name of Love. The Kerala Story is the first mainstream film directed by Sudipto Sen, and it will be released in theatres nationwide.

Sudipto Sen defended the veracity of the claims made in his film, which claimed that 32,000 women had joined ISIS in Kerala between 2016 and 2018. Sen stated that 32,000 was an arbitrary number, but provided evidence to support his claims.
