Air Conditioning Appreciation Days are annually observed from July 3 to August 15. These days recognise the invention and significance of air conditioning in modern society. Today, air conditioners serve multiple functions. In addition to cooling residences, air conditioners regulate temperatures and filter allergens in medical settings. The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (A.R.I.) also recognises the period between July 3 and August 15 as Air Conditioning Appreciation Days. This period also aims to remind air conditioner owners to clean and maintain their units appropriately.

The background of Air Conditioning Appreciation Day

Over time, humans have utilised a variety of methods to regulate the temperature of their surroundings. Before the invention of the air conditioner, civilizations devised methods to stay calm. Buildings in ancient Persia were cooled by a network of underground water passages known as ‘quanats’. The Roman aqueducts utilised a comparable system. This was a network of tunnels, pipelines, ditches, canals, and supporting structures that transported water to cities and villages. To keep the wealthy cool, cooled water was pumped into public baths and fountains, as well as their residences.

Windcatchers were used as architectural elements to generate natural ventilation in ancient Egyptian buildings. Ding Huang of the Chinese Han Dynasty improved the utility of fans by inventing a seven-wheeled rotary fan.

Willis Haviland Carrier devised air conditioning in 1902, which is when modern air conditioners can be dated. Carrier, a New York resident, endeavoured to devise a method for reducing humidity levels in a printing press in the city. He observed that air tended to cool when passing over water-filled coils, which led to the development of the first functional air conditioner. His innovation regulated both temperature and humidity. Although air conditioners were originally intended for industrial use, they ultimately found their way into residential applications.
