Christopher Street Day is observed on June 28 each year. Often referred to as C.S.D., the day is a celebration of the L.G.B.T. community that takes place in a variety of cities across the globe; they come together to celebrate themselves and promote awareness of the L.G.B.T. community in society. In some locations, it occurs on the last Saturday of the month. It has been celebrated annually since 1970 and is the precursor to Gay Pride Day. LGBT organisations typically provide floats and pedestrian groups for the Christopher Street Day Parade, which also includes floats. Nonetheless, as political party vehicles and commercially sponsored trucks become more prevalent, the parade is increasingly used for political campaigning and commercial advertising.

At the time, engaging in homosexual behaviour could result in an arrest and a sentence of five to life in prison.
Christopher Street Liberation Day and Christopher Street West Association, both based in New York and Los Angeles, organised some of the earliest Gay Pride parades in the United States on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion. The week preceding Christopher Street Day was designated as Gay Pride Week to include all members of the LGBT community.
Christopher Street Day continues to be celebrated on the last Saturday of June in both New York and Los Angeles. However, the celebration of L.G.B.T.Q. people has extended throughout Europe. In 1978, Christopher Street Day is first observed in Switzerland. In 1979, Berlin, Germany began celebrating the day annually.

The Christopher Street Day parade that is occurring today is not a straightforward, repetitive political rally. Rather, it is a colourful array of groups, associations, and organisations that have emerged from the hard-won freedom of homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender individuals.
On this occasion, it is also customary for people to wave the rainbow flag or wear apparel with the design. Peace and tolerance are symbolised by the rainbow flag.
The entire spectacle sparkles with a myriad of costumes and attire in a rainbow of hues. The drag performers and long-haired men on the gay football team are just as impressive as anything else portrayed.
The First Pride March in New York was a courageous act, as homosexuality was a sin, a disease, and a crime at the time, and queer people were considered subhuman.
Brenda Howard, a bisexual woman, has been a militant organiser her entire life, earning her the nickname “Mother of Pride” for her role in organising the Christopher Street Day March.

In 2006, the “Guinness Book of World Records” named Sao Paulo’s parade the largest Gay Pride celebration in the world, with 2.5 million attendees.
