The background of Drive Your Studebaker Day

Although the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was founded in 1852 and specialised in the production of waggons, buggies, carriages, and horse trappings, its history dates back to 1736, when Peter Studebaker and his family landed on the shores of the “American Frontier.” They constructed the first Studebaker carriage in a makeshift factory next to their residence and used it to travel as far as Roma, Brisbane, St. George, and Charleville.

The first Studebaker vehicle was a horse-drawn waggon equipped with four axles and a carriage front suspension to ensure passenger comfort. During the American Civil War, these horse-drawn waggons served as a crucial mode of conveyance. In 1902, Studebaker began manufacturing electric vehicles, and by 1904, their petrol vehicles were no longer manufactured. Studebaker models were consistently produced by the corporation for more than 50 years, resulting in widespread popularity.

Studebaker Electric remains one of the most notable models of the company’s early electric vehicles. The Studebaker Electric operated on clean, rechargeable batteries that were very simple to replace. Its electric motors were housed securely within the trunk. Even though these automobiles were fairly lethargic at the time, they were ideal for urban areas without petrol stations.

Due to the heavy toll of the great depression and post-war cashflow difficulties, the Studebaker Corporation’s South Bend plant ceased automobile production on December 20, 1963, and the final Studebaker rolled off the Hamilton assembly line on March 17, 1966. Studebaker was an independent manufacturer until May 1967, when it merged with Wagner Electric and Worthington Corporation to create Studebaker-Worthington.
