Overview of the Ekadashi Vrat

Many people observe fasts on Ekadashi and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu during this auspicious occasion. Despite the two-day fast, devotees usually keep vrat on the first day of the Ekadashi fast. Those seeking Moksha, such as sanyasis, primarily intend the second day of vrat.

During the Ekadashi Vrat, fast seekers wake up early in the morning before sunrise and take a holy bath. They then clean themselves and offer prayers and prasad to Lord Vishnu to receive health, wealth, and prosperity throughout their lives. Devotees read different katas associated with the Ekadashi vrats during prayer.

Fasting with the Ekadashi Vrat is a very strict practice where the devotees may eat fruits and drink water, but most people do not eat throughout the day. The fast is broken after sunrise the following morning when the devotees take a bath and then open the fast.

Ekadashi Vrats in 2024 – Their Importance

We observe 24 Ekadashi vrats in a year. Each day represents a different incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and fasts are observed on each day to seek His blessings in a variety of ways.

  • A devotee who wishes to have a child (in particular, a son) must observe Putrada Ekadashi. Putrada means the giver of a son and it is believed that by pleasing Lord Vishnu by fasting on this day, he or she will be blessed with a child.
  • On Satilla Ekadashi, people observe a fast and prepare prasad from Til and then consume it after offering it to Lord Vishnu the next day.
  • People believe that observing a fast on Jaya Ekadashi brings happiness and fulfills all wishes for the fast observer. It is also believed that keeping a fast on this day helps devotees get rid of all Doshas.
  • Vijaya Ekadashi – Vijaya means victory. Devotees who want to get victory over all enemies- materialistic or otherwise should observe a vrat on the day of Vijaya Ekadashi and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu.
  • In Hindu culture, Amalaki Ekadashi marks the beginning of the main celebrations of Holi, the festival of colors, in which devotees believe Lord Vishnu resides in the Amla tree.
  • Papmochani Ekadashi – This day represents the eradication of sins by praying to Lord Vishnu. People observe fasts all day long and pray to Lord Vishnu for their sins to be removed.
  • People believe that Kamada Ekadashi, the first Ekadashi after the Hindu New Year, grants the wishes and desires of those who fast on this day. They pray to Lord Vishnu in the form of his incarnation, Lord Krishna, and bring offerings to Him.
  • People pray to the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Vamana, on the day of Varuthini Ekadashi. People believe that fasting on this day protects them from all evil and brings them good fortune.
  • A fast is observed on this day to aid in the cleansing of all sins and to remove all sufferings. On this day, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to deceitfully take Amrit produced by churning the ocean from the Asuras.
  • Observing a fast on Apara Ekadashi, also known as Achla Ekadashi, blesses devotees with unlimited wealth, and if observed with the greatest devotion, also releases them from the cycle of birth and death.
  • On Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees are fasting without drinking even a drop of water, let alone eating any food. Nirjala Ekadashi is the most important Ekadashi of the year. By observing just this one vrat, people can reap the benefits of observing all vrats combined.
  • On Yogini Ekadashi, people observe a fast to free themselves from all sins. People also say that observing a fast on this day equals feeding eighty-eight Brahmins.
  • People observe fasts on the day of Devashyani Ekadashi, also known as Padma/Devashyani Ekadashi, to cleanse
