André Cassagnes, an electrician, devised the Etch A Sketch toy in the late 1950s and named it L’Écran Magique (The Magic Screen). In 1959, he brought his drawing device to the International device Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, where it was acquired by The Ohio Art Company. In 1960, the Ohio Art Company introduced the Etch A Sketch device in the United States in time for Christmas. During this period, over 600,000 units of the toy were sold.
The toy’s original screen was made of plate glass, but it was substituted with plastic for safety reasons. The Etch A Sketch device was featured in the 1995 Pixar film “Toy Story.” It had a 12-second feature that provided a substantial sales boost. To meet demand, the production line had to labour overtime.
To reduce production costs, manufacturing was relocated to a plant in Shenzhen, China in 2001. The Ohio Art Company was on the verge of insolvency prior to securing financing to remain solvent. In February 2016, it transferred the rights to the Etch A Sketch name and design to the Toronto-based Spin Master Corporation. In 1998, the device was inducted into the National device Hall of Fame. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association recognised Etch A Sketch as one of the century’s 100 most iconic toys.
Over time, the company developed additional products, including the Doodle Sketch, a Plug & Play Etch A Sketch that allows users to doodle on their television screen. Presently, there is an official mobile app for Etch A Sketch IT! that allows you to create images and convert photos into the toy’s iconic grayscale drawings.
