Farmers’ Consumer Awareness Day takes place on the second Saturday of September, which falls on September 9 this year. The purpose of this holiday is to educate the public about the lives and occupations of farmers. It is typically held in Quincy, but has a national following. Through a variety of amusing activities, the holiday provides a wealth of agricultural knowledge. These include parades, fun runs, entertainment, exhibitions, displays of agricultural equipment, as well as many others.
In 1981, Paul Harvey recounted an incident over the radio. It centred on a woman who confronts the grocer about the ostensibly high prices of food items. She was incapable of imagining the awe-inspiring work that farmers performed, not having any knowledge of agriculture.
That day, Quincy farmer Dennis Higashiyama was attentive and took immediate action. It was evident that most consumers are far removed from cultivators and are unaware of where their food originates. They are unaware of the labour involved in cultivation. And they are unaware of the unique individuals behind agriculture.
Dennis Higashiyama devised a method for bringing the farmer closer to the general public. In light of this, Farmers’ Consumer Awareness Day was created. It was initiated in an effort to show the public how farmers really are.
The holiday has effectively brought people together to recognise the significance of farmers. However, it is also a very enjoyable holiday, and many activities have been added to the celebration.
