All Saints’ Day 2023: The majority of Americans only contemplate Thanksgiving and Veterans Day when thinking about holidays in November. However, All Saints’ Day, a key festival for many Christians, occurs just at the beginning of November.

Halloween, the second-largest commercial holiday after Christmas, may receive all of our money each fall, but multitudes of Christians throughout the world devote their religious lives to the celebrations that surround this Oct. 31 event. The Christian calendar traditionally observes October 31 as All Hallows’ Eve, conducting a vigil before the holiday of All Saints’ Day (also known as All Hallows’ Day), during which the pious would fast and pray. But what precisely is All Saints’ Day?

What is All Saints’ Day?

Not just those saints recognised by the Catholic church are honoured on All Saints’ Day. As a result, All Saints’ Day honours all devout Christians throughout church history.

It’s a holiday honouring the lives and fidelity of those who have gone on before us. In order to recognise the saints’ ongoing involvement in the body of Christ, believers gather to celebrate ongoing communion with them throughout time.

All Saints’ Day is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church, which means that parishioners must go to Mass on that day. Attendance at Mass is not necessary if the holy day falls on a Saturday or a Monday. Around the world, people observe it in different ways, with many going to loved ones’ graves.

All Saints’ Day 2023 Date

On November 1st each year, Christians honour this feast day according to the western church calendar. The first Sunday after Pentecost, which often falls between early June and early July, is honoured as All Saints’ Day in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

On November 1, 2023, a Wednesday, is All Saints’ Day. All Hallows’ Eve on Monday, October 30, and All Souls’ Day on Wednesday, November 2 come before and after it respectively.

All Saints’ Day honours and remembers all saints, both well-known and obscure. In honour of the devout in Purgatory who are awaiting final sanctification, Catholics also mark All Souls’ Day. Although it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, remembering and praying for the deceased is encouraged.

For those Protestants who observe All Souls’ Day, it is regarded as an optional extension of All Saints’ Day and honours those church saints who are now victorious in heaven. In remembrance of the day Jesus slept in the tomb while awaiting his resurrection, the Eastern Orthodox churches mark a number of All Souls’ Days throughout the year, typically on Saturdays.

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2023: Date, History, Facts about Saints

Origin

This feast day, which precedes our modern Halloween customs, has a few beginnings in church tradition. According to one legend, Pope Boniface IV proclaimed All Saints Day a feast day on May 13th, 609 AD. He dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to the virgin Mary and all the martyrs on that day. Pope Gregory III created the official date of November 1 during his pontificate (731–741 AD), when he dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica to “all saints.” Pope Gregory IV established All Saints’ Day as an official Holy Day for the entire Church, not only the churches in Rome, 100 years later.

According to another legend, official observation started in Ireland and gradually spread to Rome before becoming recognised in the ninth century. As early as 270 AD, feasts of the soul are referenced informally.

All Saints’ Day Prayer

The following is an excerpt from the 2019 Book of Common Prayer:

Almighty God, in the mystical Body of your Son, you have united your elect in one communion and fellowship. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who along with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns as one God in glory everlasting, grant us the grace to follow your glorious saints in every virtue and godly life so that we may arrive at those indescribable joys that you have planned for those who genuinely love you. Amen.

Customs and Rituals Followed

All Saints’ Day is a unique day filled with customs and rituals that have been observed for generations. Attending mass on the occasion of All Saints’ Day is the most popular custom or practise. People can memorialise the saints in a special way by going to church and attending mass. Other All Saints’ Day customs include reading and studying about the saints, praying to them, and pleading for their intercession. There are also some excellent classic films about saints that can help you learn more about them, such A Man for All Seasons, Becket, and The Song of Bernadette.

There are some regional variations in the traditions observed on All Saints’ Day. In Austria and Bavaria, godfathers present their godchildren with braided yeast pastries called Allerheiligenstriezel. On this day, people in Belgium go to the cemeteries and decorate the graves of their departed loved ones with chrysanthemums. Many locations start the day’s festivities by caring to family graves and the nearby cemeteries, lighting candles, and leaving flowers. On the occasion of All Saints’ Day, numerous nations and states observe a public holiday.
