History

Kamakhaya is an alternate term for the goddess Shakti, Shiva’s adored consort. There is a mysterious account about the goddess’s origin. When Sati’s father, King Daksh, conducted a puja ceremony in his residence, he invited all the Dev lok deities except Lord Shiva. In contrast, Sati could not tolerate her husband’s insult and decided to depart. She implored Agni dev (the deity of fire) to burn her, but in the face of the goddess Sati’s power, Agni dev’s fire was rendered ineffective.

The goddess Sati then self-ignited herself. After witnessing such a horrifying event, Mahadev became enraged and murdered his own father-in-law. Then, with the deity Sati in his bosom, he began to wander the universe. The situation caused chaos throughout the universe. Then, everyone prayed to Lord Vishnu to help Shiv Ji realise his responsibilities and calm down. Vishnu ji, so as to divert Shiva ji’s attention from Devi Sati’s charred cadaver. He directed his intangible Sudarshan chakra at the deity Sati. Her corpse was broken into fifty-one fragments.

Every component is a Shakti peeth. A temple is constructed atop each of them. One of the fragments landed in the Assam region. The fragment is said to be the deity Sati’s Genital. Since then, the goddess’ genital/Yoni has been venerated, and the temple has been named Kamakhaya (goddess of maternity and fecundity). The Ambubachi mela is held annually to honour and venerate the deity.

Significance

It is a privilege for devotees to receive Rakta Bastra, a piece of cloth drenched in the deity’ menstrual fluid, as it is regarded as her benediction. Ambubachi Mela is also known as Ameti or the Tantric fecundity Festival, as its four auspicious days symbolise women’s fecundity and reproductive capacities.

The Ambubachi 2023 Rituals

The Ambubachi mela serves an important role in the devotees’ beliefs and rituals. People from multiple states and countries travel to Assam to seek the divine deity’ benediction. June is anticipated anxiously by adherents. The date of the Ambubachi mela in 2023 is June 22. The mela lasts for four days, during which time the temple’s entrances are locked. On June 26, 2023, the rituals will conclude with the distribution of Prasadam. Let us shed light on the Ambubachi Mela 2023 rituals.
