The Attwari festival is a public holiday in a region of Nepal in Asia on June 27. The purpose of the festival is to promote affection and unity within the Tharu community. In Nepal, the state of Sudur Sudur Paschim celebrates the Tharu people with a public holiday. The Nepalese government recognises the Tharu as an official ethnic group. The Terai region of Nepal and northern India are their native habitats. During the festival, Tharu men fast and pray for the longevity of all. Every year, the Attwari festival is conducted to promote love and harmony.
The Attwari festival was established by the Tharu people, Nepal’s fourth-largest ethnic group. Nepal is a democratic country in South Asia that is landlocked. Since the unification of Nepal in the late eighteenth century, the Tharu have been subjected to inequity and persecution as their territories have been granted to members of the ruling families. Since the Tharu were destitute, they were coerced into labour contracts that benefited others.
At the end of the 1950s, the World Health Organisation assisted the Nepalese government in eradicating malaria in the central Terai’s forests. It caused the Tharu people to momentarily abandon their lands, which was followed by the occupation of those lands by other tribes, leaving the indigenous Terai people homeless and unemployed.
Following the dissolution of Nepal’s Panchayat system in 1990, the Tharu ethnic organisation Tharu Kalyankari Sabha joined the umbrella organisation of ethnic groups, which was the precursor to the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities. The Tharu began to acquire political authority and material wealth. A civil conflict subsequently broke out in the new government and lasted for years.
The Comprehensive Peace Accord was concluded in 2006. And consequently, Tharu organisations proposed an autonomous Tharu state within a federal Nepal, emphasising equal opportunity and land and resource distribution.
Nepal adopted a new constitution and established seven provinces in September 2015. One is Sudur Paschim Pradesh, where the preponderance of Tharu individuals reside. In 2018, Sudur Paschim Pradesh was adopted as the province’s official name. In 2021, Attwari was designated as a public holiday in the province of Sudur Paschim Pradesh.
