Bhadrapada Amavasya 2023: Significance, Dates, Rituals etc; Chere Here!

Ancient religious texts refer to it as Kushotpatini Amavasya. Since Kusha is used to perform rituals on Amavasya, if Bhadrapada Amavasya falls on a Monday, the same Kusha can be utilised for up to 12 years.

Bhadrapada Amavasya 2023: Bhadrapada Amavasya refers to Amavasya in Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. It is also referred to as Bhadon and Bhadi Amavasya. This day has significant significance in Hinduism, particularly for offering oblations to ancestors and for removing the Kaal-Sarp Dosha. As Bhadrapada month is devoted to Lord Krishna, so this also increases the importance of Bhadrapada Amavasya. Kusha (green grass) is regarded as exceptionally fruitful, so it is gathered on this day for religious activities, Shraadh, and so on.

Rituals for Bhadrapada Amavasya Fast

Bhadrapada Amavasya is highly significant for bathing, charitable giving, and Pitru Tarpan (oblation). If this Amavasya occurs on Monday and a solar eclipse occurs on the same day, its significance is multiplied by ten. The following religious ceremonies are undertaken on this day:

  • Take a morning bath in a sacred river, lake, or reservoir. Offer Argh to the Sun God and drop sesame seeds into the water.
  • On the bank of a river, present an oblation (Pind Daan) to your ancestors and donate to the needy. In this manner, your ancestors will achieve harmony and freedom.
  • On this day, one can also perform religious rites to reduce the impact of the Kaal-Sarp Dosha on their Kundli.
  • This Amavasya is also believed to be the day of Shani Dev, so it is crucial to worship the deity on this day.
  • Light a mustard oil lamp under the Peepal tree at night and walk around it seven times while thinking of your ancestors.

The Pithori Amavasya

Pithori Amavasya is another term for Bhadrapada Amavasya. Goddess Durga is worshipped on this day. On this day, according to ancient beliefs, Maa Parvati explained to Indrani the significance of Pithori Amavasya Vrat. Therefore, married women worship Goddess Durga and observe this fast to obtain a child or to ensure the health and longevity of their offspring.
