Bodhi Day 2023 Celebrations
Around the world, Buddhists commemorate Bodhi Day. Bodhi Day can be observed in a multitude of ways. Buddhists might decide to commemorate the event, for instance, by:
• Chanting sutras, learning the dharma, and practising meditation.
• Showing compassion to both people and animals.
• Consuming a special rice and milk meal, akin to what the Buddha consumed upon attaining enlightenment.
• Establishing Bodhisattvas.
• Hanging colourful lights on a Bodhi tree in their house.
• Placing Buddha sculptures on display in their houses.
• The 30-day burning of a candle is a symbol of enlightenment.
Buddhism
A young Indian prince by the name of Siddharta Gautama gave up his luxurious existence 2500 years ago and took up an ascetic living under a Bodhi tree with the sole purpose of achieving ultimate enlightenment. The young prince then went on an incredible inner trip that tried him to the limit and pitted him against both real and imaginary demons. After a long period of rigorous meditation, he became enlightened because he could see how everything and everyone was interconnected. The Eight-Fold Path and the Four Noble Truths were the products of his enlightenment. This realisation is what Bodhi Day honours.

Bodhi Tree
A Bodhi tree is a very old sacred fig tree found in Bodh Gaya that is a member of the Ficus religiosa family. The leaves of this tree are nearly invariably depicted as hearts in religious iconography. There are other trees in different locations that have significance in Buddhism, even though the tree in Bodh Gaya is the one that is most frequently mentioned when discussing Buddha’s enlightenment. For example, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is home to a Bodhi tree.
Buddha’s Enlightenment
Four Truths
The core of Buddhism is comprised of four truths that can be expressed as follows: Humans’ attachment to transient states of existence and worldly possessions is known as dukkha, which translates to “unsatisfying.” Humans become mired in the cycle of life, dukkha, death, and rebirth known as samsara when they attempt to cling on to these things. Nevertheless, by taking the Eightfold Path, this can be avoided. True nirvana is conceivable if this route is pursued.
The Four Truths are as follows:
• Dukkha: The material and non-satisfying world in which we live and the things that we cling to.
• Samudaya: This is the origin of our dukkha which keeps us trapped in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
• Nirodha: The end of dukkha. By ending dukkha, we can escape the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
• Magga: The liberation from dukkha.
Eightfold Path
The eight Buddhist practises make up the Eightfold Path. These are the following:
• The Right View: Everything we do has repercussions and generates karma.
• Right Resolution: Taking up the life of a Buddha to pursue the path.
• Right Speech: Giving up lying and using nasty, abusive language.
• Right Conduct: It is forbidden to kill, injure, or steal.
• Right Livelihood: Only possess necessities for survival
• Right Effort: Steer clear of discordant and lustful thoughts.
• Right Mindfulness: Maintain constant awareness of one’s actions.
• Right Samadhi: Practise the four levels of meditation and work towards mental unity.
