Deepavali 2023: In the Hindu calendar, Deepavali is observed on the 15th lunar day of the month of Kartik. What, then is the occasion? The occasion of Deepavali signifies the triumph of righteousness over malevolence. Deepavali 2023: History
Commence with the narrative of the ‘Ramayana,’ the preeminent Hindu mythological epic. It tells the tale of one of the most illustrious monarchs in history. Rama ascended to the throne of Panchala, an antiquated realm that was primarily situated across the Indian subcontinent. His residence, however, was where he was exiled for fourteen years as a result of family politics. Following him into the forest to reside were his devoted wife and brother.
During these fourteen years, much transpired, including the abduction of Sita, Ram’s wife. An enormous conflict ensued in an effort to reclaim the queen, whom the evil monarch Ravana had abducted. This conflict represented the struggle between virtue and evil and acquired the moniker “the greatest war of all time.” War was conquered by Rama.
After the conclusion of the conflict, fourteen years of exile had also been completed. They returned home during the night of the new moon. In celebration of the king’s return, the inhabitants of Ayodhya (the capital of Rama’s kingdom) illuminate their dwellings and thoroughfares, thereby initiating the festival of Deepavali. The term ‘Deepavali’ is formed by combining the definitions of ‘deep’ (lighting) and ‘vali’ (array). During the Indian festive season, Little India in Singapore is illuminated both symbolically and literally. A multitude of individuals travel from various parts of the city to the location in order to partake in the festivities or to observe them.
