Devutthana Ekadashi 2023: One of the most important Ekadashi in Hinduism is Devutthana Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. During the Shukla Paksha, it is observed on the eleventh day, or Ekadashi, of the Kartik month. This day signifies the end of the four-month-long Chastimas, during which Lord Vishnu is said to sleep.
Hindu legend states that Lord Vishnu sleeps on the eve of Ekadashi during Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashada and wakes up immediately on the eve of Devutthana Ekadashi.
It is believed that no fortunate deed takes place during these four months. And all the religious and auspicious chores can only be completed after Lord Vishnu awakens.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi is scheduled for November 23, 2023, this year. Following this, a number of auspicious events are expected to occur. The fast will start on November 23 and end in the morning of November 24 following worship of Lord Hari.

- The followers recite Lord Vishnu’s name and make a pledge for the Ekadashi fast early in the morning
- After cleaning the house and taking a holy bath, they draw Lord Vishnu’s feet.
- An Okhli (Pounder) is used to hold an idol or portrait of Lord Vishnu, which is then loaded with sugarcane, water chestnuts (singhara), jujube, candies, and fruits before being topped with a lid.
- Devotees light earthen lamps in both homes and temples on this specific day.
- It is mandatory for all family members to worship Lord Vishnu and other deities at night. Devotees attempt to awaken Lord Vishnu by ringing bells and blowing the conch (Shankh).
Significance
Astrologically speaking, worshipping Lord Vishnu helps to enhance the planet Jupiter. It suggests that Lord Hari Vishnu should be worshipped if Jupiter is in an unfavourable position in a horoscope or if a person is badly affected by Jupiter. Jupiter’s location governs the performance of all fortunate deeds.
Tulsi Vivah
Tulsi Vivah is performed as part of a ritual on the eve of Prabodhini Ekadashi. Between God Shaligram, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, and Tulsi, a sacred plant, occurs Tulsi Vivah. Moreover, Tulsi is regarded as “Vishnu Priya.” Legends and Hindu scriptures state that in order to obtain the virtue of Kanyadaan, a couple must once in their lives conduct the Tulsi Vivah ritual if they are childless.

- The space where Tulsi Vivah will take place needs to be well cleansed before the Tulsi plant is placed. Geru can be utilised in a prayer space or in a Tulsi plant. Use sugarcane to adorn the canopy for the Tulsi marriage.
- Have a bath, change into clean clothes, and lay a piece of cloth for seating before starting worship. Present Maa Tulsi with Chunari and cosmetics like bangles, Bindi, Aalata, and so forth.
- Position a Shaligram on the right side of a clean board following the placement of the Tulsi plant in the Mandap (wedding location). Then, haldi and the milk of the present Lord Shaligram are combined. Use sesame when applying Tilak on Shaligram.
- In addition, fruits such as apples, plums, amla, sugarcane, water chestnuts, and others should be offered in worship.
- It is mandatory to speak Mangalashtak during the Tulsi Vivah. Now that Tulsi’s marriage is complete, everyone receives Prasad following the Vivah.
- After that, any male household member who lifts Lord Shaligram with the plank in his left hand must perform Parikarma, or circling Tulsi Mata seven times.
Legend
Goddess Lakshmi once spoke to Lord Vishnu, “O Lord! Your erratic sleeping and waking schedule annoys everyone. You can spend years sleeping and other times being awake all day and all night. Everything on Earth is being affected as a result. Since I don’t have time to unwind, it also robs me of that. Thus, I kindly ask that you go to bed on time.
Grinning, Lord Vishnu informed the Goddess that he would be sleeping for four months going forward. In accordance with the beliefs, Lord Vishnu is claimed to stay in the homes of his devotees and bestow divine benefits upon those who adore him fervently and give prayers during his periods of waking and sleeping.
