History

Durgashtami, or Durga Ashtami, is the eighth day of the Navratri or Durga Puja celebrations. According to Hinduism, it is also known as Mahashtami and is one of the most auspicious days. It occurs on the radiant lunar fortnight Ashtami tithi of the Hindu month of Aswina.

In some regions, it is believed that on this day, the deity Chamunda appeared from the forehead of Mother Durga and destroyed Chanda, Munda, and Rakthabija (demons who were Mahishasura’s associates). During the Durga Puja rituals on Mahashtami, the 64 Yoginis and Ashta Shakti or matrikas (the eight formidable forms of Goddess Durga) are worshipped. In various regions of India, the Ashta Shakti, also known as the Eight Shaktis, are interpreted variously. In the end, however, all eight goddesses are manifestations of Shakti. They are the same mighty Divine Feminine, but they represent distinct energies.

The Ashta Shakti worshipped during Durga Puja are Brahmani, Maheswari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasinghi, Indrani and Chamunda.
