Dyngus Day is observed by Poles and Poles-in-the-United-States on Easter Monday to mark the end of Lent; this year, it falls on April 10. The joyful custom includes numerous festivities, including parades. The parties commence at midday with a buffet of traditional cuisine and continue until Tuesday morning. Historically, on Easter Monday, men showered water on women and tapped them with pussy willows. Tuesday, the girls would do the same to the lads. At modern Dyngus Day celebrations, men and women exchange water and pussy willow branches in equal measure. Since pussy willow is one of the earliest plants to blossom in the spring, its branches are the day’s most important prop.

The background of Dyngus Day

Dyngus Day is commonly referred to as “Smigus Dyngus.” It dates back to before Poland was Christianized. It was recorded in 966 A.D. during the reign of Mieszko I, which should provide a sense of how long the peculiar Easter custom has existed. Given its alleged origins, the practise cannot be associated with the newly discovered Christian faith in the country. Instead, the majority of experts believe that it is a synthesis of Slavic tribal rituals (similar traditions exist in the Czech Republic and Slovakia), pagan beliefs, and subsequent Christian additions, all of which combine to create a unique Easter celebration of polytheistic ritual.

In Poland, Dyngus Day coincides with the exchange of symbolic painted eggs. (and across much of Europe). This is due to the fact that the previous pagan celebration was focused on celebrating the fertility of the new season and the expectation for a successful harvest later in the year.

Dyngus Day is a cryptic reference to the pagan past of Poland. Easter allowed for water rituals, allowing Slavic rural communities to combine a religious period with folk courtship ceremonies that were, above all, very practical.

Poland still celebrates Dyngus Day. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Poles are aware of the gender distinction that underpins the old tradition, the modern practise has all but abandoned the boy-girl courtship of the past. In contrast, Dyngus Day is more of a free-for-all, a public water battle in which town squares come alive with aqua bouts, regardless of the ancient significance they once held.
