The actual date of Eid-el-Ghorban is determined by lunar observations, so it may vary from nation to nation.

The background of Eid-e-Ghorban

The “Feast of Sacrifice,” also known as Eid-el-Gharbon, commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as commanded by Allah. This is one of the most significant Islamic festivals. This Islamic holiday is celebrated for three to four days by millions of Muslims across the globe. The holiday commences on the tenth day of the lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar during Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca; the exact date is determined by lunar observations. A few days after lunar sightings on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, Eid al-Adha concludes with the conclusion of Hajj.

According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim had a premonition in which he was compelled to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah’s command. He had this dream repeatedly until one night, when he arose and instructed his wife to prepare their son for an important event. When the time was right, Ibrahim told his son about his ambition. When Ishmael responded that he obeys God’s will, his father attempted to stab him to death.

Allah sent Ibrahim a lamb to sacrifice instead of Ishmael because they had followed God’s will. Later, Ibrahim and Ishmael worked together to construct the Kaaba, the holy site in Saudi Arabia for Muslims.
