The background of Glastonbury Festival

Michael Eavis, a dairy farmer and merchant, decided to organise his own hippie-themed music and arts festival in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Since Eavis’ first Glastonbury Festival in 1970, when it was known as the Pilton Pop, Blues, and Folk Festival, it has become the largest multi-day outdoor arts festival in the world. Due to its iconic status, hundreds of thousands of people flock to the muddy fields of Worthy Farm to witness the finest of the art world.

While it also features the best in theatre, comedy, dance, and visual arts, it is best known for showcasing the most talented musicians from a variety of disciplines. From up-and-coming artists to luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, The Smiths, Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Beyonce, and David Bowie, it has become a highly anticipated annual music festival event.

Due to its prestige and promise of an unforgettable experience, performing at Glastonbury is considered a career pinnacle for musicians. It has helped advance the fortunes of then-emerging bands and provided a platform for subcultures of every era. Eavis’s curation has been lauded for his astute eye on current trends, movements, and cultures, providing them with the ideal platform to cement their legacies.

The Glastonbury Festival is so well-known and legendary that it has served as a model for music festivals all over the globe. The festival, regarded as a cornerstone of British culture, is inspired and directed by the unwavering hippie ideal of attaining peace and unity through the arts.
