Govardhan Puja 2023: This year, the day is observed on November 15, the fourth day of Diwali. The phrase, which translates to “pile of grain,” is venerated in Hindu households as a remembrance of Lord Krishna’s conquest over Lord Indra via the ascent of Govardhan hill. The grain accumulation on this hill is a representation of it, which is in line with Lord Krishna’s teachings about praising nature. Annakut Pooja, an alternative name for this day, is among the most significant spiritual observances conducted throughout India.
The term “Governardhan” originates from the mountain bearing the same name, which Shri Krishna alone conquered. The term ‘vardhan’ means sustenance, while ‘go’ means bovine in Hindi. “Go” can also mean “sensations,” and “vardhan” can also mean “increase.” Therefore, by worshipping Krishna, one can “increase one’s senses.” There is a belief that individuals who pay homage to Govardhan hill develop a deeper sense of devotion and faith in Shri Krishna.
This day in Hindu history signifies the triumph of Lord Krishna over Lord Indra. On Govardhan Puja, the significance of the fundamental components of human existence is also emphasized. It is said that today is the perfect occasion to express affection for mother nature. Devotees perform the Annakut Puja by presenting Chappan Bhoga, which comprises 56 food items, to Lord Krishna.
Additionally, Hindu mythology describes how individuals prayed to Lord Indra for the preservation and protection of their harvest. Conversely, the fields were leveled by torrential precipitation. Lord Krishna, who resisted Lord Indra’s tyranny by causing tempestuous rainfall, preached on the significance of nature and its consequences. By elevating the Govardhan hill, Lord Krishna provided protection for the populace and a barrier against the vengeance of Lord Indra.
Another anecdote associated with Govardhan Puja is that of King Bali, an adversary of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that annually, during the Govardhan Puja, King Bali ascends from Pataal Lok to visit his kingdom. This day is therefore commonly referred to as “Padva” and “Bali Pratipada” in certain regions of India.
