Hanukkah 2023: Marking the Calendar for the Final Night Celebration

The holiday celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Jews successfully resisted the Greek invaders.

Hanukkah 2023: Hanukkah, the eight-day “festival of lights,” began at sundown on December 7, 2023, and went on until December 15, 2023.

The holiday celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Jews successfully resisted the Greek invaders. It is a sign of how light won over darkness.

Hanukkah 2023: Marking the Calendar for the Final Night Celebration

Judas Maccabeus led a revolt against Antiochus, the king of Syria, who ordered the Jews to stop following the Torah and start worshiping Greek gods, more than 2,000 years ago.

His fighters, called the Maccabees, cleaned and restored the Temple that had been soiled. The Talmud says that a small amount of oil miraculously kept the candelabra burning for eight days.

“Chanukah” means “inauguration” or “dedication,” which is a good way to think about how the Holy Temple and altar were rededicated. The Chanukiah, also called the menorah, is a candlestick with eight branches and a ninth candle, called the shammes. It is lit every night during Hanukkah, which is pronounced with a nasal “kh” sound.

A Hanukkah menorah, which is also sometimes called a Hanukkiah, is a candelabrum that holds nine candles and is used during the eight-day Jewish holiday.

The seven-branched candelabrum has nine lights on each branch, one for each day of the holiday. One light will be lit on the first day, two on the second, three on the third, and so on. In short, each light stands for a different day of the event.

Having fun with family

Latkes, applesauce, sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), and rugelach are all traditional foods. When making them, people often stress how important it is to use oil.

Hanukkah traditions include eating together as a group, which is a way to bring people together, and giving children Hanukkah gelt (money).

The dreidel is a four-sided spinning top that is used in games. The Hebrew letters on it spell out “a great miracle happened there,” which is a reference to the oil miracle.

Consumer gifts are not a traditional practice, despite what most people think. Instead, the attention stays on the lights on the menorah, which represent the miracle event.

On the whole, Hanukkah is a time to think, celebrate, and get together with family and friends.
