Hariyali Teej 2023: This year, Hariyali Teej or Singhard Teej falls on August 19. This holiday is observed on the third day of the radiant phase of the lunar month of Shraavana. Haryali translates to “greenery,” which represents the earth becoming verdant due to monsoon rainfall after the summer heat.

Hariyali Teej is a festival that is observed primarily by married women. They observe a 24-hour fast without water during this festival. On this day, parents give their daughters and daughters-in-law a Sindhara present, which typically includes ghewar, homemade sweets, and henna.

During Hariyali Teej, wedded women worship the deities Shiva and Parvati. Maa Parvati is prayed to not only for her husband’s long life, but also for his pleasure and the birth of their son. This fast also benefits the physical and mental health of women who observe it, alleviating any mental disorders they may be experiencing.

On Hariyali Teej, women who fast must rise early, bathe before sunrise, and then adopt a fasting vow. They should adorn themselves with Solah Shringar by applying green cosmetics predominately. Lord Shiva is anointed with Gangajal and Panchamrit while facing east during the ritual. Belpatra, incense, lamps, flowers, cannabis, and dhatura should be presented as offerings. Lord Shiva should be presented with naivedya.

Goddess Parvati should also be honoured with cosmetics and sweets such as halwa and kheer. Recite the mantras of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati during worship, and listen to the tale of Hariyali Teej. Finally, perform aarti and present married women with items associated with Suhag. In addition to singing folk and spiritual melodies, women perform special dances on this day.

Goddess Parvati, also known as Teei Mata, is processed through the streets of Rajasthan as part of the Hariyali Teej festival. Hariyali Teej is an official holiday in Haryana. In Punjab, women perform Gidda, a traditional dance, while in Chandigarh, students commemorate the occasion by staging cultural events and plays.
