Karwa Chauth 2022: Date, When to Celebrate and Fast for Karva Chauth

This year, there is confusion about whether Karwa Chauth will be observed on 13th or 14th of October 2022.

Karwa Chauth is a grand festival observed by married Hindu women across the country. On this festival, married ladies observe a strict fast from sunrise until moonrise. This fast is observed for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. According to the Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth is observed on Chaturthi Tithi which is the fourth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year, there is confusion about whether Karwa Chauth will be observed on 13th or 14th of October 2022.

Karwa Chauth is celebrated by means of searching for the moon and performing fasting rituals. In most Indian households, married women fast for their husbands and seek blessings from the Karwa Chauth Maata to furnish a longer life for them. In India, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 13, Thursday. The festival will begin at 1:59 am on Thursday, Oct 13 and will end at 3:08 am on Friday, October 14.

Married women worship Chauth Mata and offer prayers to Goddess for the well-being of their husbands and seek blessings for Chauth Mata. Karwa refers to the earthen pot through which the water is offered to the Moon. The water offering to the Moon is known as Argha. All married women break their fast solely after offering Arghya to the moon.

The culture of applying Mehendi or henna is a main and necessary part of Karwa Chauth. In the Hindu culture, Mehendi is symbolic of good fortune for married women. Women apply Mehendi on their hands and toes on this special day of Karwa Chauth.

Sargi is considered to be the main phase of Karwa Chauth Day. Sargi is a special meal prepared which is eaten before daybreak It usually consists of seviyan or vermicelli, paranthas, fruits and all. Sargi tradition is not followed by all as this is in general followed by Punjabi community people. Women prepare delicious food on this day despite watching fast and the food is first offered to Chauth Mata.
