History

According to legend, during the upheaval of Kshirsagar, Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Kurma carried the Mandar mountain on his armour. Thus, with the assistance of Lord Vishnu, Mandar Parvat, and a serpent named Vasuki, the Devas and Asuras obtained fourteen jewels by churning the ocean.

Seeing the bravery of Devraj Indra, the sage Durvasa presented him with a Parijat flower garland, but Indra refused it and instead wore Airavat, who flung it to the ground. Enraged by this, Durvasa cursed the gods. Given that the deity of prosperity Lakshmi should vanish. As a result, gods and demons travelled to Mahadav. Mahadav instructed them both to stir the Kshir Sagar together. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Kurma for the purpose of churning the ocean, and with the assistance of Vasuki and Mandar Parvat, the ocean was agitated.
