Lailatul Barat 2023: Date, History, Facts

Lailatul Barat is a 2-day procession performed by the Islamic community from March 7 to March 8 this year. The holiday is observed on the fourteenth and fifteenth night of the Islamic month of Sha’aban, which is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. This festival, also known as Shab-e-Barat, symbolises good fortune and atonement. Muslims view this night as a time of profession because Allah decides people’s fortune for the upcoming year and whether or not they will be able to conduct Hajj.

This month, Muslims are instructed to fast for at least six days. Muhammad discouraged his companions from fasting prior to the 15th of Sha’ban out of concern for their physical health.

Lailatul Barat is celebrated in the midst of Sha’ban, the month preceding Ramadan. It is the holiest night according to the Islamic calendar. This night, at sunset, Allah descends to the nearest heaven and declares, “Is and is no one pleading for absolution so that I may pardon him? Is there no one requesting provision for whom I could provide provision? Is there no one suffering whom I could help? “Doesn’t such-and-such exist?” Thus, the night begins at sunset on the 14th of Sha’ban and ends at dawn on the 15th. This month, women who menstruated during Ramadan have the opportunity to make amends.

The Islamic tradition commemorates Muhammad, who prostrated himself in prayer for so long that his wife feared he had perished. After confirming that he was still alive, she went to bed and reassured herself that he was in good health. Muhammad explained to his wife that he was observing a sacred night during which God pardons believers and frees countless individuals from hell.

On Lailatul Barat, celebrations, cooking, and remaining up all night in prayer are all components of the celebrations. Young children are afforded a break from school in order to allow them to rest. On this night, people in some parts of the globe visit graves and honour their ancestors. In addition to worshipping throughout the night, Islamic traditions require Muslims to fast on the 15th of Sha’ban.
