Magh Purnima 2024: The Hindu Dharma places great importance on the Full Moon, or Purnima, in people’s lives. It is significant from a scientific as well as a spiritual standpoint. The moon is a symbol of thoughts, feelings, tranquility, spirituality, and more. The full moon is when the moon is at its brightest and most favorable. Astrology claims that a full moon is an auspicious planet because it has the highest Paksha Bala.
According to the Hindu Lunar Calendar, the month of Magh is when the Magh Purnima occurs. Spiritual progress is a fruitful endeavor during this month. This is a day when worship, prayers, and giving are all beneficial. At holy locations like the Triveni Sangam, devotees worship and bathe. People bathe in the sacred river from Purnima in Paush to Magh to wash away multiple sins and kundli doshas. Let’s understand in detail the meaning, effects, and significance of Magh Purnima 2024.
Traditionally, the holy bath in the month of Magh starts on the Purnima of Pausha and lasts until the Full Moon of Magh, also known as Magh/Maghi Purnima. The last day of the Triveni Sangam bath is Maghi Purnima. On this day, people fast. Sanatan Dharma, also known as Hindu Dharma, states that bathing in holy rivers is a means of obtaining Lord Krishna’s blessings. In Vedic astrology, Lord Krishna represents the moon. Therefore, on Maghi Purnima, taking a bath in a holy body of water strengthens the Moon in the birth chart by attracting the blessings of Lord Krishna into one’s life.
As per the Hindu calendar, Magh is a significant month (Panchang). On Magh Purnima, people fast and take baths in holy rivers. Donating is regarded as being very advantageous on this day. On this day, worshippers offer prayers to Hanuman and Lord Vishnu. The Yamuna, Kaveri, Ganges (Ganga), and other rivers are among the holy waterways.
Hindu scriptures state that on this day, Lord Vishnu resides in the Ganga River and that touching the water has healing properties. It’s said that if you wish while taking a bath in the river, your wish will come true.
India has a variety of regional customs. The state of Tamil Nadu holds a prestigious “float” festival. On the floats, they adorn the idols of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundeshwara. Then, at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which is the confluence of the Ganges (Ganga), Yamuna, and vanished Sarasvati, a massive fair known as the Magh Mela is also held annually.
In Buddhism, too, the day has religious significance. Buddhists hold that on this day, Lord Buddha attained salvation. Buddhist scriptures claim that when Lord Buddha realized salvation, the earth shook. On this day, Buddhists observe rituals, pay respect, chant, pray, and donate to the underprivileged and needy.
Worshiping Lord Hanuman removes evil spirits’ influence, sins, bad energy, nazar dosha, and other issues.
The divine powers are said to come down to Earth from space during the month of Magh and remain on the banks of the Ganga River. On Magh Purnima, hundreds of pilgrims from all over the nation gather for the renowned fair, during which they bathe in the river under the moon’s radiant light.
Dhaneshwar was a Brahmin who formerly resided in Kantika town. Previously, he was dependent on household donations or alms to survive. Brahmin didn’t have any kids. People used to treat his wife disrespectfully and refer to her by name because of this. They did not even offer the childless couple any donations. They both worshipped Maa Kali for sixteen days in a row as devotees of hers. After being pleased with their devotion, Goddess Kali asked them to make a wish. Each of them requested a child.
Next, on each Purnima, Maa Kali instructed the couple to worship Lord Vishnu and light a lamp or diya. The Goddess commanded them to increase the number of days to 32 by adding one for each Purnima. Beginning with the Magh Purnima, the couple continued in the same manner. They were blessed with a boy child, thanks to Maa Kali’s blessings. Since then, people have worshipped Magh Purnima and revered Lord Vishnu, keeping fasts to fulfill their desires.

Astrologically speaking, this day is also significant. While the Sun stays in the sign of Capricorn, the moon moves through its sign of Cancer. All kundli doshas are eliminated by the holy bath, particularly those associated with the sun and moon. People benefit from both luminaries’ blessings by gaining strength and confidence.
Giving respect to Lord Hanuman and Lord Vishnu fortifies the natives’ moon. The Moon is friends with both of these planets; Lord Hanuman represents Mars and Lord Vishnu represents Jupiter. As such, they support the moon’s strengthening in an individual’s horoscope.
