Maha Navami 2023: Occasionally in November, Maha Navami is observed, the exact month being determined by the lunar phase in the Hindu calendar. It occurs on October 23, 2021. In accordance with Hindu mythology, the Goddess Durga vanquished Mahishasura, the “buffalo demon,” on this day. As a symbolic victory of good over evil, millions of Hindus in India and around the globe observe this festival.

HISTORY OF MAHA NAVAMI

Mahishasura possessed extraordinary abilities as a demon. In contrast, Asuras (demons) were perpetually defeated in battle against the Gods. Ravishing at his perpetual defeat, Mahishasura vowed to effect change. Long ago, he dedicated himself to meditation on Brahma, the progenitor of the universe and all life, while forsaking slumber, food, and all other creaturely comforts. He offered a fervent and concentrated prayer to Brahma.

Brahma was ecstatic. He manifested himself before Mahishasura and advised him that any desire he might have would be duly fulfilled. Brahma granted Mahishasura a boon that would render him impervious to harm. “Neither man nor god shall be able to defeat me,” he declared. Mahishasura was certain that no woman could ever vanquish him due to his inflated ego. Brahma bestowed the blessing on him.

Mahishasura subsequently initiated his reign of terror. He quickly conquered the planet. He then attacked and captured the celestial dwelling of Indira, the King of the Gods. The Gods’ formidable arsenals that were directed at him proved to be ineffective. As Mahishasura appeared to be impregnable, the deities appeared impotent.

Then, every single eye was fixed on Goddess Parvati. She promptly assumed the form of Durga. Durga possessed ten limbs, formidable eyes, and gold adornments. She appeared both stunning and menacing. She raced into battle atop a lion and confronted Mahishasura.

Mahishasura possessed formidable strength and the capacity to transform into both human and bovine forms. It took Mahishasura and Durga nine days to battle. Durga pierced Mahishasura’s core with a spade on day ten, resulting in his demise.

Thus, Goddess Durga put an end to the anguish that Mahishasura had nearly inflicted upon the heavens and earth.

Since then, that day has been observed as Maha Navami, and the tenth of that month is referred to as Vijayadashami (which translates to “victory” and “tenth”), signifying the triumph of virtue over evil.
