Lord Mahavir was the offspring of King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala. According to Swetambars, he was born in Kundalagrama, Bihar, on the thirteenth day of the Hindu calendar month Chaitra in 599 BCE, whereas Digambar Jains believe he was born in 615 BCE. During his youth, he was granted the name Vardhaman. Even though he was born into a royal family and surrounded by luxuries and conveniences, he did not participate in this materialistic world. These mundane delights never appealed to him. At age 30, he left the kingdom, his family, and his worldly responsibilities to seek inner serenity and tranquilly in the forest. He diligently performed 12 years of penance to attain salvation.

Mahavir Swami Kevalgyan Significance

Mahavir Jayanti is an important holiday for the Jain people. They commemorate this day with great zeal and enthusiasm. This day is dedicated to the Jain prophet Lord Mahavir, one of the most well-known saints.

It is known that while pregnant, Mahavira’s mother had a number of fortunate visions. While pregnant, the Svetambara Jains believe she had 16 visions, while the Digambara Jains believe she had only 14.

Lord Mahavir is revered as one of the holiest and most accomplished peace and harmony missionaries. Lord Mahavir is the twenty-fourth and final Jain Tirthankara. In remembrance of the famous saint, children are told several stories about Saint Mahavir.

Rituals

  • Awaken early in the morning and perform a ritual ablution.
  • They position an image of Lord Mahavira, present flowers, and conduct abhisheka
  • Devotees present candies and vegetables. The idol is transported via chariot.
  • On this particular day, they distribute food and clothing to the impoverished and needy.
  • On this religious holiday, people observe a strict fast.
  • In temples, lectures on the Jainism-described path of virtue are given. Numerous renowned Jain temples are frequented by hundreds of thousands of devotees.
