Onam 2023: Onam, one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Malayali Hindu community, symbolises the beginning of the annual harvest season in southern India. As the official state festival, it is commemorated with great enthusiasm and accompanied by multiple festivities throughout Kerala. According to the Malayalam calendar, the ceremony is held in the first month of Chingam, which corresponds to August and September in the Gregorian calendar. In 2023, Onam celebrations will begin on August 20 (Sunday) and end on August 31 (Thursday).

The Significacne of Onam

Onam is primarily celebrated in Kerala, the Malayali-speaking region of southern India. It is believed that Ditya Raj Mahabali descends from heaven to confer pleasure and prosperity upon his Malayali-speaking subjects. Ten days in advance, preparations are made to welcome them. Homes are embellished, and delectable meals are prepared.

With gorgeous flowers, people embellish their homes. Additionally, Rangoli is created at the entrance of the home. This makes their beloved King Mahabali happy. Onam is one of India’s most colourful festivals. This festival is so popular that the Keralan government commemorates it as a tourist attraction. In addition, boat contests, dance, music, and banquets are organised during the Onam festival.

In addition, it is said that at this time in Kerala, the harvest of tea, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, and paddy is available, and that people celebrate this festival and share their happiness in the wake of a successful harvest.

History

There is a popular tale regarding the Onam festival. People who speak Malayali consider this story to be the origin of this festival.

Magnificent King Mahabali

King Mahabali was the descendant of Prahlad, one of Lord Vishnu’s most devoted devotees, according to ancient mythology. Due to his excellent deeds and respectful behaviour towards his subjects, King Bali’s reputation grew among the world’s inhabitants. Despite being a demon monarch, monarch Mahabali took excellent care of his subjects, and they had a great deal of respect for him. One of the characteristics of the monarch was his participation in charitable activities.

Incompatibility Between Other Gods and King Mahabali

According to the plan, Lord Vishnu was born as Vamana (Brahman) in the home of Sage Kashyap. The child progressively matured into a young adult. Lord Vishnu arrived in the kingdom of Mahabali in the form of a Brahmin at a time when the monarch was planning a large Yagya and met the king. Shukracharya recognised Lord Vishnu upon seeing him and understood his plan.

King Mahabali And Lord Vishnu

According to tradition, Shukracharya warned King Mahabali, telling him, “Rajan, this is Vishnu; he has undoubtedly come to ask you for something. Don’t give to charity without consulting me first.”

However, King Mahabali disregarded Shukracharya’s words. The monarch then told Lord Vishnu, who appeared as a Brahmin, that he could ask for anything. On this basis, Lord Vishnu requested three steps of land from the monarch. The king smiled and instructed you to take three paces of land wherever you desired.

As the monarch spoke, Lord Vishnu assumed his cosmic form and, in one step, covered the entire earth; in the second step, he covered the heavens. Then he inquired where he should place his third limb with King Bali. In response, the demon monarch Mahabali smiled and asked, “What should I do, Lord, since this world is so small for you? Now only my cranium remains.

The Faithfulness Of King Mahabali

Lord Vishnu immediately placed his feet on King Mahabali’s head and commanded him to govern heaven until the end of the Kali Yuga upon hearing this. Lord Vishnu was highly influenced by King Mahabali’s devotion and generosity. So he requested that Mahabali make a request before ascending to heaven.

Then Mahabali asked Lord Vishnu to grant him permission to visit his constituents once a year. Lord Vishnu granted his request. It is believed that King Mahabali visits the earth on Onam to meet his devotees.

The east sides of the homes of women in Kerala are adorned with “Pookkalam” floral motifs. To greet King Mahabali or Maveli (Onappattukal), they burn lamps and sing traditional Onam songs.

During the ceremony of Thiru Onam, a swing is hung from a lofty branch of a tree. Women take turns riding this rose-decorated swing while singing entrancing melodies.

On the third day of Onam, a grand feast known as “Onam Sadya” is organised for families and acquaintances. At least thirteen dishes, including rice, vegetable curry, curd, and Payasam (sweet stew), are prepared on banana leaves. Payasam is considered an essential Onam Special dish. It is composed of rice, milk, sugar, and coconut.

Organised is the popular “Vallamkali” or Snake Boat Race. At the race in Alappuzha, Kerala, hundreds of enormous, elaborately adorned boats with at least seven drums participate. This enormous Onam exhibit draws visitors from all over the nation and the globe.

On the ninth day of Onam, people give gifts of vegetables and coconut oil to the senior member of the family, known as “Karanavar” (Onakazhcha). This ritual is primarily practised by the Nair sects of Kerala, who are the primary practitioners of this method.

During the Onam holiday, temples and religious sites host a variety of cultural activities and festivals, especially on the tenth day. Elephants are adorned with ornaments, and grand processions are conducted.
