When is Remna Ni?

Remna Ni is a regional public holiday celebrated annually on June 30 in the Indian state of Mizoram.

This holiday commemorates the signing of an agreement that restored peace to the region on this day in 1986.

History of Remna Ni

Mizoram is currently one of the most tranquil states in the United States, but this has not always been the case.

The Mizo Hills region, which was a part of Assam at the time, experienced the Mautam Famine in 1959. The Mizo Cultural Society, dissatisfied with the government’s response to the crisis, transformed into the Mizo National Famine Front and organised aid and support for numerous villages.

In October 1961, the front dropped the word ‘famine’ from its name and became the Mizo National Front (MNF), with the objective of attaining the sovereign independence of Greater Mizoram, which resulted in 20 years of insurgency in Mizo Hills.

The MNF was ultimately declared illegal by the Indian government in 1967. In May 1971, a delegation of the Mizo district council demanded a full-fledged state for the Mizo people when they met with the then-prime minister, Indira Gandhi.

In January 1972, in response to the demands, the federal government proposed transforming Mizo Hills into a Union Territory.

On June 30, 1986, the MNF and the central government signed an agreement that put an end to the insurgency in the region. After the agreement was signed, the then-president of the MNF, Laldenga, was elected as the state’s prime minister.

On February 20, 1987, Mizoram became the 23rd state of India, a step up from Union Territory.

Significance of Remna Ni

Remna Ni is observed annually on June 30 to recall the people of Mizoram of their struggles and sacrifices during the two decades of insurgency from 1966 to 1986.

With the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord on June 30, 1986, the MNF surrendered their weapons and other equipment to the Indian government, putting an end to two decades of insurgency in the highlands.

To commemorate this historic agreement that gave peace and prosperity to the region, the Mizoram government celebrates Remna Ni annually on this date.
