Sacrifice Feast Eve in Turkey 2023: Date, History, Facts Regarding Islam

Thanksgiving Feast Eve is one of the earliest Islamic festivals commemorating the Prophet Ibrahim. Allah once requested the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his most cherished possession in order to demonstrate his love and faith.

Every year, approximately seventy days after Ramadan, Sacrifice Feast Eve is observed. This year’s celebration will occur on June 28. The date of the Sacrifice Feast Eve, which commences on the tenth of the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is determined by the residents of Muslim-majority nations such as Turkey. The Feast of Sacrifice commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, after which he sacrificed a ram. The custom of prepping on the eve of the Sacrifice Feast dates back to the Qur’an.

The background of Sacrifice Feast Eve

Thanksgiving Feast Eve is one of the earliest Islamic festivals commemorating the Prophet Ibrahim. Allah once requested the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his most cherished possession in order to demonstrate his love and faith. The devoted Prophet Ibrahim decided to sacrifice his only son, whom he held in highest regard. When the Prophet was about to offer a sacrifice, however, God substituted his son for a ram. The moral of the story is that obeying God is never a mistake.

Muslims in Turkey commemorate the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice annually, approximately 70 days after the end of Ramadan. In Turkey, the ram (or sheep) and the mosque are the most prevalent symbols of the Sacrifice Feast Eve. Arefe, which is an official Turkish holiday, is the name of the eve of the festivity. Typically, office buildings, colleges, and post offices are closed, whereas supermarkets remain open. Schedules for public transport may differ. During the holiday season, many people travel to other cities, which can cause traffic congestion. On the eve of the Sacrifice Feast, some individuals purchase new clothing and cook food. Others prepare their homes for guests who may wish to remain during the four-day Sacrifice Feast, which follows the Sacrifice Feast Eve. For the Feast of Sacrifice, the chief of each household may select a sacrifice animal (typically a goat, sheep, or cow).

Eid al-Adha is significant because it represents the conclusion of ‘hajj’ or ‘pilgrimage,’ the fifth pillar of Islam. This annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is only obligatory for physically and financially qualified men and women once in their lifetimes.
