On this day, it is customary for Jains to visit their relatives or make an effort to catch up with them while reciting Michchami Dukkadam.
Samvatsari Festival 2023: Samvatsari will be observed throughout the entirety of Gujrat between mid-August and September of 2023. This regional holiday is observed on Shukla Panchami in the Jain calendar month of Bhadrapada. The celebration occurs on the same day as Ganesh Chaturthi.
Samvatsari is considered one of the sacred and most significant days on the Jain calendar. This festival is observed on the final day of ‘Parva Paryushana,’ the holiest festival for the Shwetambara sect of Jainism. On this day, Jains ask for forgiveness from all living entities for any mistakes they have made, whether intentionally or unintentionally. In addition, they absolve those who have harmed them in the past. This festival is also known as Kshama yachna divas (apology-seeking day), daya divas (kindness day), and ahimsa divas (nonviolence day).
On the day of the festival, alms are distributed to the needy, and the image of a Jina (great teacher) is ceremoniously borne through the streets. The faithful engage in a communal confession, and letters requesting forgiveness are sent.
On Samvatsari, Jains say’michachhami dukkadam’ to their acquaintances and family. I seek your absolution if I have offended you in any way, whether intentionally or unintentionally, in thought, word, or deed.

Samvatsari is an essential Jain holiday that marks the culmination of the eight or ten-day Paryusana celebration, according to the Jain Calendar. The eighth day is Samvatsari, the absolution Day: a day for forgiving others and also seeking absolution from all creatures of the world whom they may have intentionally or unintentionally harmed by uttering the phrase Michhami Dukkadam.
Digambaras and Swetambaras. In other words, Swetambaras celebrate Samvatsari on the eighth day of Paryusana Parva, while Digambaras do so on the tenth day of Das Lakshan Parva.
During Samvatsari, Jains are required to perform six acts:
1- Maintain composure – Samayika
2- Pay respect to the Tirthankaras – Chaturvimshati
3- Give respect to Jain sadhus and sadhvis – Vandana
4- Admit guilt – Samvatsari Pratikraman
5- Meditate while Praying – Kayotsarga
6- Make a resolve to exercise self-control – Pratyakhyana
On this day, it is customary for Jains to visit their relatives or make an effort to catch up with them while reciting Michchami Dukkadam. People who are out of town have also conveyed this message, and a vow made that whatever the grievance may be, they will not continue it forward to the next year.
